How To Listen To Music: Frank Sinatra at the Sands

How To Listen To Music is committed to helping you deepen your relationship to yourself and to culture by training you to better understand and appreciate the music that you listen to.

In this gathering we will be doing the our second investigation of the work of Quincy Jones via his work as an arranger on Frank Sinatra’s Sinatra at the Sands. Recorded in 1966, this album reflects a different kind of musicianship and entertainment than we are used to now. The role of arranger is not so prevalent in most modern popular music and Quincy describes the skillset and mindset needed to be up to par. These arrangements are very tasty and we will be able to talk some about orchestration and harmony in a way that is almost lost in today’s soundscape.

In our next gathering we will be doing the our first investigation of the work of Quincy Jones via Michael Jackson’s Album, Thriller. Thriller is the best selling album of all time and is considered to be Jackson’s Magnum Opus. Quincy served as producer for this project and this investigation will in part be a conversation about what a music producer actually is and how to listen for their contribution.

Playing Hot

ya’ll heard the good news? Mosey on over to midtown cuz we got a time portal to brassy old New Orleans, where the sound was born. What sound? Better come find out! Step into our jazz hall and watch your cares melt away, while we conjure up the spirit of Buddy Bolden, the cat that blew that cornet you could hear for blocks. This here’s a play slash brass band concert slash explosive theatrical dance party that’ll leave you sweaty and hot and feelin’ them feels, as we riff on Buddy’s story just like he riffed on dem notes!

Quadrivium, MoMath’s Math + Music Salon, featuring Marcus Miller and Bobby Sanabria!

Coming up Saturday, September 15th in NYC! Doors open 6:30PM at The National Museum of Mathematics.

Overview:

Jazz musicians and mathematicians view their work in much the same way: mastery of theory, problem solving, skill sets, and joyous, spontaneous creation are all part of the deep history and the ongoing development of jazz and mathematics. Quadrivium, MoMath's exciting Math plus Music Salon hosted by jazz saxophonist Marcus Miller, brings together the creative and technical communities in NYC and creates a space where learning and growth are filled with fun, wonder, and warmth. This month, drummer and percussionist Bobby Sanabria joins Marcus in discussing — and demonstrating — the historical and cultural stories behind a variety of rhythms.

Stick around after the talk for live music, refreshments, and a lively dance party on Manhattan’s only Voronoi dance floor!

Schedule:

6:30PM - Doors Open
7:00PM - Announcements and Math+Music "Rhythm" Presentation Begins
8:00PM - DJ Luna Rosa spins and we take over the dancefloor! Snacks and beverages and mingling.

Quadrivium: Math + Music 3

Math+Music is an international public art series bridging the technical and creative spheres. We use art and live musical performance to creatively explore technical, often mathematical, concepts. In doing so, we invite people to develop fresh insights, form new connections, and cultivate personal growth.

Our project aims to harness the power of music to create space for learning - and in doing so, change the world. Our purpose is to foster curiosity, build community, and inspire as many people (and young minds) as possible to think outside the box.
